SEVENTEEN

My eyes opened when I heard banging. I was lying on my couch, and Rex was perching on the edge of a chair on the other side of the living room. He cocked his head like he was trying to examine me. Then he took off toward the kitchen, probably to destroy a cereal box on top of the refrigerator.

“Samuel?” I whispered as the events of the night came flooding back: my trip to the Beast, Ian Masterson, what had happened behind the garage.

Loki came down the hallway a moment later and bent over to get a look at me. He whistled, shaking his head as he straightened back up. “Glad to see you’re not dead. Dog would have skinned me alive. After he beat my ass.” The hair on one side of his head was caked with blood.

I pushed myself up with a groan. “What happened to you?”

“Got a rough handshake from whoever paid you a visit tonight. Nothing you need to worry about.”

Then I noticed what he was wearing. “Is that my bathrobe?”

“It was hanging on the bathroom door, and it fit. Well, sort of.” He ran his hand down the fluffy blue fabric. “It was either this or my birthday suit.”

I was used to seeing the wolves in their birthday suits, but things tended to get weird after a few minutes.

“Dog will still kill you when he finds out you dropped the ball tonight,” Samuel said to him as he walked into the living room.

“I was taking a piss. The bastard came up behind me and hit me before I could shift.” There was another staring match between them. “By the way, thanks for the blood,” he finally said to Samuel with a sneer. “I’m feeling another hurl coming on, so I better get to the bathroom.”

Samuel smiled. “Next time I’ll let you die.”

Loki stepped up to him. “There won’t be a next time, bloodsucker.”

What was it with vampires and wolves? Once they got to know each other they were fine, but it was always a pissing contest until they got a steady whiff of each other’s ass.

“Stop,” I said. “My head hurts enough without having to listen to you two going at it.”

Samuel held Loki’s steady gaze a moment longer. “Why don’t you run along and go patrol something so Charley and I can speak in private.”

Loki broke eye contact with him and looked at me. “You okay with that?”

“It’s fine. Thanks, Loki. If you get hungry tonight, help yourself to whatever’s in the kitchen. There’s a spare key in the bird feeder out front.” No one ever thought to look for a key in a bird feeder. “You can just leave my robe on the porch,” I said as he was walking toward the door.

He stripped it off and tossed it over the chair on his way out, giving me a look at his perfect ass. “Holler if you need me.”

Samuel watched Rex sail from the kitchen and across the living room, disappearing out the door with Loki.
